Technical guide

01

Function & position

Carrier rollers (top rollers) support the upper run of the track chain and shoes between the idler and the sprocket. They keep the chain aligned and prevent it from sagging and slapping against the frame.

On some compact machines the upper chain run slides over steel wear guides instead of rollers — but wherever carrier rollers are fitted, a smooth top run protects the chain, the frame and operator comfort alike.

02

Construction

Hardened tread and flange, sealed and lubricated for life. Because they carry only the chain weight, carrier rollers are smaller than track rollers — but their alignment is critical: a tilted or stuck carrier roller steers the whole upper chain run off line.

03

Maintenance

  • +Keep the top of the track frame free of packed soil — material building up under the chain forces it against the roller flange.
  • +Check that every carrier roller turns when the machine travels; a stationary roller grinds a flat spot within days.
  • +Look for oil films around the seal area after working in water or deep mud.

04 · Component_Knowledge

Recognizing wear

+Wear on the running surface or flange, or visible oil leakage.
+A bent or broken bracket, a sagging axle or a roller that no longer runs true.
+A flat spot means the roller has seized — usually caused by packed sand or mud between roller and frame. Regular undercarriage cleaning prevents this.

FAQ

Carrier Rollers — common questions

What does a carrier roller do?+

Carrier rollers support the returning (top) run of the track chain, preventing sag and keeping the chain aligned with the idler and sprocket. Most excavators use one or two per side.

How do I know my carrier roller needs replacing?+

Common signs are visible tread wear or flat spots, oil leakage from the seal, a roller that no longer spins freely, or excessive chain sag that persists after tensioning.

How much does a carrier roller cost?+

Prices depend on machine model and roller size. Request a quote on the part page for your model — direct manufacturer pricing.

Are these carrier rollers OEM quality?+

Yes — VANROCK carrier rollers are manufactured to OEM specifications from forged alloy steel with deep-hardened treads and sealed lifetime lubrication, made 100% in our own factory.
