Function & position

The sprocket engages the chain bushings and transfers the drive power from the final drive to the track. It mounts around the drive hub and only drives the chain — it carries none of the machine weight.

Because it meshes with the chain on every revolution, the sprocket is a precise mirror of chain condition: whatever happens to the chain pitch shows up in the sprocket teeth first.

Sprockets vs. segments

A sprocket is a one-piece toothed ring with bolt holes or a press hub, used mainly on excavators. Segment groups consist of several bolted segments that together form the sprocket ring — standard on bulldozers, because individual segments can be replaced without splitting the track chain.

Construction

Cast or precision-forged and machined, with induction-hardened teeth: a hard wear surface over a tough core prevents both rapid wear and brittle cracking. Steel with too little carbon becomes brittle in hardening, and a tooth hardened only at the skin wears through quickly — which is why the hardening depth matters as much as the hardness number. Sand notches in the tooth base limit wear from packed soil.

Replacement strategy

A sharp sprocket with seemingly healthy links is a warning, not a coincidence: teeth only sharpen when the chain pitch has already elongated. On dry chains, sprocket and chain must therefore always be replaced together — a new sprocket on a stretched chain (or the reverse) wears out in a fraction of its normal life.

On oil-lubricated dozer chains, segments wear in the cup between the teeth. As long as the chain does not leak, replacing segments before the end of their cycle buys the whole undercarriage several hundred additional operating hours.

Recognizing wear

+Sharp, pointed teeth — the classic sign of chain pitch elongation: the bushings no longer sit centered in the tooth pocket.
+Lateral tooth wear — caused by misalignment, worn chain guides, poor idler guidance or a twisted frame.
+Packing wear — hard soil compacted between bushing and tooth base accelerates wear on both parts.
+Wear cups between segment teeth on lubricated dozer chains — replace the segments in time to protect the chain.
