Function
Track bolts and nuts clamp the shoes to the chain links. They are hardened fasteners — typically strength class 12.9 for track bolts and 10.9 for sprocket and roller bolts — forged from alloy steel and heat-treated to OEM specification.
It is the bolt preload, not the thread, that holds the joint: a correctly stretched bolt clamps shoe and link together so firmly that the joint moves as one piece.

Fitting correctly
Track hardware is tightened in a defined sequence to a specified torque plus turn angle, on clean, dry threads. Under-torqued bolts let the shoe move and hammer the joint until the holes elongate; over-torqued bolts are stretched past their yield point and can snap in service.

Always replace, never reuse
Reused track bolts rarely reach the correct clamping force again — in the vast majority of cases, reused hardware is the direct cause of loose shoes. Loose shoes enlarge the bolt holes, the damage spreads into the links, and a cheap fastener turns into an expensive chain repair. Fit new bolts and nuts at every overhaul.
