01
Function & position
The idler (front idler wheel) guides the track chain at the front of the track frame and, together with the tension unit and recoil spring, keeps the chain at the correct tension. It also absorbs shock loads when the machine travels over obstacles.
Correct chain tension runs through the idler: a chain that is too tight puts constant preload on pins, bushings and the idler itself; a chain that is too loose slaps, derails easily and hammers the guide components. Checking tension against the machine specification is the cheapest life insurance an undercarriage can get.
02
Construction
Machined from tough steel alloys with an induction-hardened running surface, assembled with face seals, oil-filled and leak-tested. Controlled casting and heat treatment give a deep hardness layer — critical because the idler is in rolling contact with the links every single revolution of the track.
03
Idler & tension system
The idler is mounted in a yoke that slides in the track frame on wear pads. Behind it sit the tension cylinder and the recoil spring: grease pumped into the cylinder pushes the idler forward to tension the chain, and the spring lets the idler yield when a rock jams into the undercarriage. Worn slide pads let the idler tilt — one of the most common hidden causes of a chain running crooked.

FAQ
Idlers — common questions
What are the signs of a worn front idler?+
Look for tread wear beyond the OEM limit, oil weeping from the center seal, visible flange wear, or a track that keeps de-tensioning or tracking off-centre.
How much does an excavator idler cost?+
Idler prices vary with machine size and whether you need the bare idler or the complete assembly with bracket and tension unit. Request a quote for your model — direct manufacturer pricing.
Do you sell complete idler assemblies?+
Yes — bare idlers, idlers with brackets, and complete idler groups with recoil springs where applicable. Tell us your model and preferred configuration in the quote request.
Are VANROCK idlers OEM quality?+
Yes. Idlers are made in our own factory to OEM specifications, with induction-hardened wear surfaces, metal face seals and lifetime lubrication, and 100% final inspection.
